Format and Partition Data Disks
<p>This article describes how to format and partition data disk in the Windows operating system.</p>
<p><strong>Prerequisites</strong></p>
<p>You have purchased data disk and successfully mount it to the target Windows instance.</p>
<p><strong>Usage Guidelines</strong></p>
<p>1. Data disks purchased together with instances do not need to mount but are partitioned in the operating system.</p>
<p>2. Do not perform risky operations such as formatting Disk C in the operating system. It would cause data loss.</p>
<p><strong>Procedures</strong></p>
<p>1. Log in to Windows instance.</p>
<p>2. On the desktop of Windows, right-click the <strong>Start</strong> icon, and click <strong>Disk Management (K)</strong> to enter the <strong>Disk Management</strong> page.</p>

<p>3. Disk 1 is offline. Right-click <strong>Online</strong> in Disk 1 area. </p>

<p><strong>Note:</strong> After getting online, the status of Disk 1 turns into <strong>Uninitialized</strong>.</p>
<p>4. Right-click Disk 1 area, and select Initialize Disk (I).</p>

<p>5. In the dialog box of <strong>Initialize Disk</strong> that opens, Disk 1 is selected by default. Select disk partition style, and click <strong>OK</strong>.</p>
<p><strong>Note:</strong></p>
<ul>
<li>MBR is well adaptable. If the disk size is no more than 2 TB, we recommend that you select MBR.</li>
<li>If the disk size is over 2 TB, we recommend that you select GPT but it cannot be recognized by all previous versions of Windows.</li>
</ul>
<p>6. In the <strong>Unallocated</strong> area on the right side of Disk 1, right-click <strong>New Simple Volume (I)</strong>.</p>

<p>7. You will enter <strong>New Simple Volume Wizard</strong> page, and click <strong>Next</strong>.</p>

<p>8. Specify the size of simple volume by selecting size between the maximum and minimum size. If you only want to create one primary partition, you can select default size. Click <strong>Next</strong>.</p>

<p>9. Select driver letter, and click <strong>Next</strong>.</p>

<p>10. Select <strong>Format the Volume with the Following Settings (O)</strong> including File system, Allocation unit size, and Volume label. Decide whether to select <strong>Perform a quick format (O)</strong> and <strong>Enable file and folder compression (E)</strong>. Click <strong>Next</strong>.</p>

<p>11. Click <strong>OK</strong> to complete new simple volume wizard.</p>

<p><strong>Result</strong></p>
<p>After you complete to format and partition data disk, you can view that the status of Disk 1 is <strong>Good Condition</strong> and can use the data disk. </p>
